SO WHAT ARE MICROGREENS?

Microgreens are young, edible plants harvested at an early stage of growth, typically just after the first true leaves (cotyledons) have developed, usually with the first 2 weeks of growth.

They are known for their vibrant colors, intense flavors, and exceptionally high nutritional value.

There are around 80 edible plant types suitable for microgreens generally selected for flavor, texture, color, and nutritional and value they bring to a dish

ARE MICROGREENS NUTRIENT PACKED SUPER FOOD?

Microgreens are so nutrient-packed due to several factors related to their growth and developmental stage:

  1. Early Growth Stage: Microgreens are harvested at an early stage of growth, when the plant is developing rapidly and concentrating its nutrients in the small leaves and stems. This period is when the plant's nutrient density is highest, often surpassing that of mature plants.

  2. Concentration of Nutrients: During their early growth phase, microgreens are focused on developing their essential structures and can accumulate higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants per unit of mass compared to their fully grown counterparts. Scientific studies have reported the some microgreens can contain up to 40 times the nutrient value compared to a full grown plant!

Microgreens also provide the same health benefits as the grown plant type. Therefore, it is smart to include multiple types in your diet.  Here are some key health advantages generally observed across most microgreens types:

  1. Nutrient Density: Microgreens are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as important minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. They often contain higher concentrations of these nutrients compared to their mature counterparts.

  2. Antioxidants: They are a good source of antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Antioxidants can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support overall health.

  3. Digestive Health: Many microgreens, such as those from the cabbage family, contain dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and supports gut health.

  4. Cardiovascular Health: The high levels of vitamins and antioxidants in microgreens can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by improving blood vessel health and reducing inflammation.

  5. Immune Support: Vitamins like C and E found in microgreens play a crucial role in strengthening the immune system, helping the body fight off infections and illnesses.

  6. Bone Health: Some microgreens, such as those rich in vitamin K, support bone health by aiding in calcium absorption and bone mineralization.

  7. Low in Calories: Microgreens are low in calories but high in nutrients, making them a great addition to a balanced diet for weight management and overall wellness.
